A historic night for Swiss Football

The entire football-loving nation of Switzerland had been eagerly awaiting this moment.

When referee Alina Peşu from Romania blew the whistle to kick off the opening match between Switzerland and Norway at exactly 9:00 p.m. in front of 34,063 fans in Basel, the air was thick with anticipation. Even though the game didn’t end with the result many had hoped for, football history was made that night: never before had so many people watched a Swiss women's national team match live in a stadium. A new attendance record – a milestone for women’s football in Switzerland.

And the tournament itself is setting new standards: even before the first kick-off, over 600,000 tickets had already been sold – a clear sign of just how much the UEFA Women’s EURO 2025 is capturing hearts.

Football fever has also fully taken hold in Bern. Last night, the tournament was the talk of the town in streets and alleyways across the city. Many shops decorated their windows with creativity and passion to celebrate the event. Thousands of fans gathered in the Fan Zone Bundesplatz to watch the match – many dressed in red and white, waving flags, wearing jerseys, and showing their unwavering support.

And tonight, the action comes to Bern itself: for the first time, the ball will roll in the Stadium Wankdorf. Since early morning, Portuguese and Spanish fans have filled the city – the excitement is palpable, the atmosphere electrifying.
